Unimatic is an independent Italian brand that makes tool watches and very little else. The Modello Uno is its dive watch, the Modello Cinque its field watch, and both are designed around legibility: oversized lumed markers, full minute scales, high contrast. But every now and again, they like to throw caution to the wind, and forget that design brief. The result is the new ICON series that uses the same cases and strip them of pretty much everything but the basics. Very cool.

There are two models in this collection. The Modello Uno measures 40mm wide (41.5mm up at the bezel) and 12mm thick, with 600 meters of water resistance. The Modello Cinque, being the field watch, is smaller at 36mm wide and 12mm thick, rated to 300 meters. Both are made from Grade 2 titanium and come either sandblasted or in black DLC. The Uno keeps its rotating bezel with a single lume dot, while the Cinque has a fixed bezel with no lume.

All that means that the cases are nearly identical to regular editions, meaning that all the focus is on the dial, which is extremely simple, done in black with the Unimatic logo engraved at six o’clock. The hands are white and skeletonised, and the white parts are Super-LumiNova BG W9 that glows blue. I love how the white hovers over the black dial.

Both models use the Sellita SW200-1b, the no-date version of the SW200-1, beating at 4Hz with 38 hours of power reserve and a stated accuracy of ±12 seconds per day. It’s a dependable, unremarkable movement, and appropriate at this price. Each watch comes on a black suede two-piece strap with quick-release pins and a titanium buckle.

The Unimatic ICON models are limited to 99 pieces for each of the four variants and they are on preorder right now, with deliveries happening November 10th. The Unimatic Modello Uno ICON is priced at €1,550 in sandblasted titanium and €1,700 in black DLC, while the Modello Cinque ICON costs €1,450 and €1,600, respectively.
