# Jaeger-LeCoultre Retunes Calibre 182 For A Single Duometre Grande Sonnerie

The Calibre 182 first appeared in 2009 inside the Hybris Mechanica à Grande Sonnerie, Jaeger-LeCoultre's first chiming grande complication for the wrist. 17 years later the brand has reopened it, reworked the gongs, added a safety lockout, and it now finds itself inside the new Duometre Grande Complication à Grande Sonnerie. I very often mention watches that are very hard to get. This one is right at the top of the unobtanium pyramid. 

The case is 45mm wide and 16.16mm thick, assembled from 60 components. The body is titanium, with the lugs, bezel and pushers done in 18k 5N pink gold, with a finish being a mix of microblasting and polish. Considering the size of the watch and the liberal use of gold, the titanium here is not used to make the watch much lighter. Instead, titanium has proven itself to be a very good conductor of sound, perfect for a sonnerie. And if you think that the watch is too large, do consider the fact that this has 15 complications.

The dial is more openworked than the 2009 version, but at the same time it should be more legible since the central hour, minute and calendar dial has grown by 30 percent. That has a dark blue -grey lacquer, with the centre of the time dial sunray brushed under lacquer, and the outer ring gets gradient blue lacquer over sunray guilloché with applied 18k pink gold indexes. The perpetual calendar is fully retrograde: date on a pink gold arc between 7 and 11 o'clock, with the day and month on a pink gold inner ring with small gold arrows. The leap year indicator sits at 12, the chime-mode indicator at 6, and both power reserves are openworked. Between 8 and 9 o'clock you can watch the strike sequence governor, a 22-component tower just 6.04mm tall that tells the racks what order to strike in. That's pretty crazy.

The manufacture calibre 182 is hand-wound, beats at 4Hz, and is made up of an incredible 1,300 parts. Especially since it's 10.4mm thick. The Duometre system, invented by Jaeger-LeCoultre in 2007, gives it two barrels with separate gear trains feeding one regulator: one powers the time and calendar for 48 hours, the other powers only the chimes, so they never take away from the timing power reserve. 

That chiming barrel holds 616 notes in Grande Sonnerie mode (seven and a half hours) or 992 notes over 32 hours in Petite Sonnerie. The acoustics have all been reworked, with longer gongs, refined fixing and a slightly reshaped profile that let the watchmakers tune the six overtones in each chord along with the fundamental note, where normally only the fundamental can be adjusted. The selector at 6 o'clock (time-setting, Grande Sonnerie, Petite Sonnerie, silent) disables every mode you're not in, and a new lockout stops you retriggering the repeater before it resets. Flip the watch over, and you'll see the flying tourbillon and nine finishing techniques, including 87 hours of hand bevelling across 251 components. It comes on a black alligator strap with a pink gold folding buckle with micro-adjustment.
