The category has drifted to 40mm, 42mm and beyond, growing even more in the third dimension, with thicknesses that starts being anoying. Sure, that big brand that loves making field watches recently noticed that their watches have been growing out of control, and have released smaller stuff, but I wish more went back to their small and light purpose-built. Bulova was one of three American companies, alongside Elgin and Waltham, making the original A-11 for US forces in the Second World War, and its new A-11 Jimmy is a direct reference to those watches. Sure, at 37mm it's not as small as the original, but it balances a sensible size, provenance and decent pricing for a nice package. The stainless steel case is 37mm wide, up from roughly 32mm on the wartime watches. That's a reasonable concession to modern wrists, and still smaller than almost every field watch launched in the last decade. The coin-edge bezel, fluted crown and curved lugs are all direct quotes of the original, and the caseback is engraved with a reference to the US Government specification. There's a sapphire crystal on top, and you get 50 meters of water resistance. The black dial follows the A-11 layout exactly: white hour numerals, a railroad minute track around the edge and minute markers at 10-minute intervals. Sword hands for hours and minutes, and a thin needle for seconds, and the hands are treated with Super LumiNova. Inside is the Miyota calibre 9039, an automatic beating at 4Hz, with 42 hours of power reserve. Miyota and Bulova are both Citizen Group brands, so the pairing makes sense. While previous A-11 versions came on nylon NATO straps, this one gets a very cool khaki woven two-piece strap with a steel pin buckle and quick-release spring bars. It looks far more like the real thing used on the orginal. The Bulova A-11 Jimmy, reference 96A354, is available now, priced at $795\. Alain Silberstein and Vianney Halter both took a turn, but Konstantin Chaykin's Wristmons have been the most fun of the lot. The Unfrogettable, his Frog Princess from last year, now returns in two new colors and it's just as fun. The case is 40mm wide and 12.45mm thick, made out of grade 5 titanium. Chaykin turned the regulator movement 90 degrees, which pushed the crown to 12 o'clock, so he made it a three-pointed tiara on the frog's head. The crown had to move anyway, which you'll see why later. To make room, the lugs wrap around the case in a way that recalls De Bethune's articulated lugs. Without the articulation, of course. You get sapphire crystals on top and bottom, as well as 50 meters of water resistance. The reason for the rotation of the movement is to use the regulator display's hour and second indicators that usually sit at 12 and 6 as frog eyes by moving them to 9 and 3 o'clock. Hours are indicated in the left eye, seconds in the right, and because the pupils turn at different speeds, the face never looks quite the same twice. Minutes are indicated around the edge, pointed to by an arrow-shaped hand. There are two colors available – turquoise and brown. The turquoise version gets a grained dial, a two-tone violet and dark turquoise minute track, and a rhodium-plated hand. The brown version has 5N-treated accents on the crown, while the eyes and minute hand sit against a grained brown dial. Both have green lume on the eyes and the arrow tip. Inside is the Sellita calibre SW266-1, the automatic regulator base Louis Erard already uses across its collection, beating at 4Hz with 38 hours of power reserve. It's reliable and easily servicable. Both models come on black Himeji Kurozan calfskin strap, hand-rubbed, naturally tanned and finished with Urushi lacquer, closed with a titanium pin buckle. The Louis Erard x Konstantin Chaykin Unfrogettable is limited to 178 pieces in each color, priced at CHF 4,500 excluding tax. People are often quite surprised to learn that they've been around for 100 years, which is impressive. One of their more popular watches is the integrated-bracelet model, the midland, which now gets a limited edition with a gives it a dial cut from the Muonionalusta meteorite. The steel case measures 40.5mm wide and 14mm thick, with a lug-to-lug of 47mm. That's a lot of watch, there's no two ways about it. Chronographs can fit in 14mm, let alone a time-and-date. The case has satin-brushed flats with polished bevels, and on top is the same fluted bezel as on the regular Midland, surrounding a flat sapphire crystal. Water resistance is 100 meters. But this release is all about the new dial, made out of etched Muonionalusta meteorite, bringing to focus the beautiful Widmanstätten pattern, a crosshatch of metal crystals formed by cooling of the space rock. That pattern is different in every dial, giving them a unique look. You get applied indexes, palladium-plated hands, a thin minute track, white Super-LumiNova BGW9 on the markers and hands, and a date aperture at 3 o'clock. Inside is the familiar Sellita SW200-1, beating at 4Hz with 41 hours of power reserve and a Delma-signed rotor visible through the display caseback. The integrated steel bracelet is brushed with polished edges, measures 22mm at the lugs, and closes on a folding clasp with pushers. As a consequence, the time-and-date version faded into the background a bit. Well, no longer, as GO just the other day introduced the new 70s collection, with a smaller case, a new dial, a newer movement and a quick-change strap system. And boy, is it cool. The previous variant of the Seventies Panorama Date came in at 40mm wide and 11.5mm thick, so the new dimensions sound like a dream. The width went down to 39mm, which is fine, but the fantastic lug-to-lug of 43.7mm and even better thickness of just 9.6mm make this a supremely wearable watch. Can't wait to try one on. The case is satin brushed with polished bevels, and there are sapphire crystals on top and bottom. Water resistance is 100 meters. Now, for a bit of bad news. The Panorama Date had one of the more impressive date displays on the market, with a huge double aperture dominating the dial. That date is unfortunately gone now, replaced by a pretty standard date window at 3 o'clock. But I assume that was the sacrifice that had to be made to slim down the watch. Is it a good move? For most, yes. For my gorilla wrists, the big date was better. But I dig this change. The new watches come in three colors, finished with an hexagonal grid texture, applied solid gold indices and solid gold obelisk hands with Super-LumiNova. Vinyl Record pairs a matte black dial with white gold, Tweed Amp a brown dial with 5N red gold, and Stereo Panel a silver dial with black-coated gold. Inside is the in-house calibre 36, replacing the calibre 39-47 and taking the power reserve from about 40 hours to 100\. That's very cool. It still beats at 4Hz with a silicon hairspring, and the finishing through the caseback is proper Glashütte: ribbed three-quarter plate, hand-engraved balance cock, blued screws and a 21k gold rotor. Vinyl Record gets the black-rhodium calibre 36-10; the other two use the rhodium-plated 36-11\. Straps are calfskin-lined rubber on the new Groove Lock system, which is their proprietary quick release system. The steel bracelet uses the same connection and a double-fold clasp with 3mm of fine adjustment. The Glashütte Original 70s is on sale right now, with the price for the Tweed Amp and Stereo Panel set at €13,100 on rubber and €14,400 on the bracelet. While the newsletter was down, I had to take some time off, so we did a family holiday to Tuscany, driving between the small towns and eating a lot. We did a day in Florence, as well, which is where I forced my entire family to go to Piazza San Giovanni, ignore the Duomo for a bit, and go check out the Panerai store. As it happened, this store is celebrating its 100th anniversary, having opened in 1926 as Orologeria Svizzera, and for decades it was where the Panerai family sold, assembled and repaired watches. It reopened to the public in 2001 after a renovation, and Panerai is marking its centenary with two Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni references based on a rare 1960s prototype, the Ref. 6152/1. The prototype measured 47mm, and Panerai could have kept it at that size, but they had mercy on our wrists, cutting the size down to 44mm. This being Panerai, we don't get the exact thickness or lug-to-lug, but Luminors wear a bit smaller thanks to the cushion shape and short lugs. On the side is the iconic brushed crown-protecting bridge. The PAM01794 is made out of polished steel with a closed, brushed caseback engraved with an illustration of the Florence boutique and 300 meters of water resistance. The PAM01734 uses Platinumtech, Panerai's hardened alloy of 95% platinum, with an open sapphire caseback, and water resistance drops to 100 meters. Both have a slightly domed sapphire crystal meant to recall the Perspex on 1960s Luminors. Both variants use circular-brushed sandwich dials with cut-out numerals at the cardinals and cut-out indices elsewhere, filled with green Super-LumiNova, and "Panerai Firenze" sits below 12 just as it did on the prototype. The PAM01794 pairs a black dial with blue-finished pencil hands, while the PAM01734 goes green with gold-colored hands. Inside is the in-house Panerai calibre P.5000, hand-wound with two barrels and a 192-hour power reserve (that's the 8 Days or 8 Giorni in the name), beating at 3Hz, with a Glucydur balance and Incabloc shock protection. Both watches come on Tuscan calfskin hot-stamped with the Florentine lily: black leather with a white gold trapezoidal buckle and a spare green rubber strap for the PAM01734, dark-brown leather with a brushed steel buckle and a spare black rubber strap for the PAM01794. The Panerai Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni PAM01794 is limited to 1,000 pieces, priced at €10,700\. The PAM01734 is limited to 100 pieces at €55,000\.
